Nora arranges a fundraising event which the rest of the family show little enthusiasm in attending. Sarah is particularly against the arrangement as the company will have to cover the costs which will prove difficult because of the lack of available finances.

Tommy and Julia are desperate to conceive so Tommy is distraught when he discovers that he is infertile. Meanwhile, Joe accidentally lets slip in front of Nora that the company is facing bankruptcy, leaving her in shock.

Kitty asks Warren if he will accompany her to Nora's event but is embarrassed when he declines her offer, as unbeknown to her he has already been invited and is taking Amber, the new intern, as his date.

Scotty is waitering at the party and Kevin ends up unintentionally offending him by offering to pay him the money he would have earned by working to attend instead as his guest.

Against the wishes of the family, Sol and Holly continue to date, which creates an awkward atmosphere when they greet Nora and kitty at the party. Later on in the evening, it is apparent that Sol has a particular interest in Holly's daughter, Rebecca.

As the event unfolds, Nora suffers a series of embarrassing incidents, including being groped by Harry. The indiscretion is witnessed by his wife, Margaret, who heads directly for the cloakroom, followed closely by an apologetic Nora. Upon entering, she finds Tommy and Julia in a compromising position.

Nora's public humiliation is continued as Sarah confesses that the company is on the verge of collapse because of financial problems that they may not be able to resolve.
