Season 4 Finale Speculation -- Who Dies & Nearly Dies?

So, the title of the Season Finale is "On the Road Again" -- which I would assume is both literal and a follow-up to the Season Premiere... "The Road Ahead"

We know that this is Rob Lowe's last episode and he's requested that his character die...is this going to happen? My vote: YES -- he dies. The question then becomes, how?
Based on Ausiello's spoiler: "Brace for Impact" -- my guess is that Rob dies in a plane crash and not from a heart attack.

We also know that Justin, Rebecca & Saul all have interesting offers that could take them away from home...presumably to Haiti for Justin/Rebecca

What about Saul? He's complained a lot about his lack of a boyfriend. Anyone want to speculate that one of the two guest actors appearing in the final couple of episodes might be a potential love interest for Saul who suggests they go on a wine tour around the world?

Tommy -- If they sell Ojai off, then maybe he decides to go back to Seattle for awhile?

Then, there's the fact that Nora's old lover Roger is returning from England. Might he try to convince Nora to go back there for a long visit, since all of her children are jetting off to parts foreign and domestic.

MY Guess: the entire family is at the airport at the end of the episode except for Kitty and Robert who are flying back to the airport from a Campaign rally in Northern California. The only question remains -- where are Kevin & Scotty who presumably aren't going anywhere with their future child soon to be born? My guess is that Kevin is with Robert & Kitty to assist, while Scotty is taking care of Evan as a trial run for parenthood. He's probably at the airport with Evan and the rest of the family to greet Kevin, Robert & Kitty.

Which means that the whole family, minus Kitty & Robert & maybe Kevin, are excited and laughing and waiting for their various flights at LAX...some may have even gotten onto planes already ...but then the tv news anchor announces the crash of the campaign plane with everyone onboard presumed dead, including Robert, Kitty & Kevin. We may even see the wreckage and a dead Robert...then we see the family react and fade to black for the summer on Nora's reaction.

What's the Big Huge Secret?

So, to run-down, there are supposed to be two big secrets revealed in the April 2-part episode of B&S.

From Ask Ausiello:

http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2010/01/21/ask-ausiello-spoilers-lost-glee-bones/

In what has become something of an annual tradition, B&S will stage a special two-hour episode in April. As I first teased last week, the eppy will flash back to 1973 and 1986 and require casting younger versions of the entire Walker clan. “The episode is in search of two secrets from the past,” reveals exec producer David Marshall Grant, “one is devastating, and one is trying to uncover the hidden value to Ojai Foods.”

Entertainment Weekly Article:

In other news, just got the most recent Entertainment Weekly Magazine, and it talks a teeny bit more about the Time Warp Episode -- reiterating that one secret is devastating and one answers the question of whether there's a secret value to Ojai Foods.

1. They are going back to 3 different time periods: 1973, 1986 & 2006

The 73 sequence will show the "beginnings of the Nora/William/Holly triangle"

The 86 time jump will show the Walker kids as teenagers -- Sarah, who's back from college at 20 and Kitty who's a senior in high school at 18.

One question posed: "Is there another illegitimate Walker sibling out there? "It does not involve that," says Grant. "That I can take off the table." (Nora thanks you.

From Ask Ausiello:

http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2010/02/03/ask-ausiello-spoilers-on-glee-chuck/

The “shocking and transformative secret” at the center of the two-hour flashback-heavy episode this April will emerge during a circa 1986 Walker family event, according to showrunner David Marshall Grant. The episode will also take us “back to the day of our pilot, which is when William died,” reveals Grant. “We’ll look at the pilot from a different angle and [discover something] we didn’t know happened that day.”

Ken Olin commented in his interview with Bonnie Hunt:

"30 years ago, 15 years ago, 3 years ago -- Not only will be see the kids, but we may see when some of the relationships began, and I think primarily for Sally Field's character, there's a big secret that she's sat on for a long time that will be revealed and hopefully stir things up."

Exclusive: More casting news

http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2010/01/26/is-brothers-sisters-losing-calista-flockhart/

I'm happy to see that it's scaling back and not gone completely. Also, does help explain Rob Lowe's decision as well. What this means for season 5 (or if this is good/bad news for whether there will be a season 5), I do not know.

ETA: I will say that Kitty has never been my favorite character, and I do feel she's about as "under-utilized" as Robert. Since she's actually a Walker, however, I'm more accepting of that. I do feel she's an important part of the show, but if this means we get relatively more Nora, Saul, Sarah, Kevin and Scotty, and Justin (minus Rebecca), perhaps even more development of Holly-the-person (not Holly-the-villain), and even occasional returns from Tommy, I'm more than happy with a smaller Kitty presence.

ETA again: I made this topic title vague so as not to spoil anyone who didn't want to be. If moderators think this should be changed, feel free!

It's a surprise development for the ABC drama Brothers And Sisters, but Rob Lowe has worked out an amicable exit strategy with ABC's Steve McPherson, who brought him in when the series stumbled out of the gate. The ratings rebounded at the time, and then Lowe’s character, U.S. Sen. Robert McCallister, became a regular cast member. Insiders said that, since then, the show has been through at least 4 different show runners, and he felt under-utilized in the family drama storyline. McPherson confirmed Lowe’s exit. "We would like to keep Rob at ABC; we feel he should be anchoring his own franchise. We are in talks now.” Lowe previously exited West Wing also in the middle of its series run.
It's true: Rob Lowe to exit 'Brothers & Sisters'
by Michael Ausiello

I see another heart attack in Senator McCallister’s future.

Rob Lowe is departing Brothers & Sisters later this season, the actor’s spokesperson confirms.

According to Deadline Hollywood, which first broke the news, Lowe felt he was being underutilized on the ABC drama and asked to be released from his contract. The network granted his request and he’ll leave at the end of the season.

Deadline is also reporting that ABC wants to remain in business with Lowe and is talking to him about headlining his own series.

There’s no word how B&S plans to write out Lowe’s dreadfully boring character, but a Robert-Kitty divorce seems the likeliest scenario given the couple’s recent marital woes. Either that or his ticker finally gives out.

Which scenario would you prefer? And will you miss him? Sound off below!

Pretty much confirms what I was already thinking about this episode. Most likely after Kitty collapses at the wedding, it's discovered that she needs a bone marrow transplant. And taking into account the spoilers about Ryan playing a key role in Kitty's recovery in this episode, I believe he’ll be the one donating.

Quote

or alternatively something with Justin and med school (although I think just after the pregnancy and wedding it will probably be a quite patch for him and Rebecca).

I'd be surprised if Justin is still in med school at that point. I don't see any reason for the scene with Justin and the EMT in 4.10 unless they plan on having him drop out of med school and become an EMT instead. Otherwise that scene would be completely pointless.

Balthazar Getty Returning?

from tvguidemagazine.com:

Quote

Brothers & Sisters star Balthazar Getty (Tommy) wants his full-time, series-regular status restored next season—and is in discussions with the ABC drama about making that happen. “That’s what we’re talking about,” Balty told me on set when he rejoined his former costars to shoot Justin and Rebecca’s beach wedding for the December 6 episode. “I’ve made some suggestions, and they’re working out what’s best for the show. At the end of the year, everybody will sit down. I’ve made a commitment to this show, and I would be honored if I could finish that. I’ve got a lot of feelings invested here, and I think the show works best with all of us.”

The feeling is mutual. “It’s great having Balty back,” costar Calista Flockhart says. “I love him, and it makes me happy when he’s here.” Executive producer Alison Schapker claims the series always planned to have Tommy “leave the family, as siblings do, but to one day return.” Prospects appear less bright for Tommy’s estranged wife, Julia (Sarah Jane Morris), who pops up in the wedding episode but doesn’t attend the family ceremony. Asked if fans should remain hopeful for a reconciliation, Balty says, “I don’t think that’s going to happen. I’m sure she’ll come back in some form, but there’s too much water under the bridge.”

Instead, newly minted show runner David Marshall Grant plans to introduce a fresh love interest for Tommy in late winter. And in the soapy drama’s typical incestuous style, Grant reveals she will turn out to be Holly Harper’s kid sister (aka the sibling of the woman who had an affair with Tommy’s dad). Little Miss Harper doesn’t have a name yet, but Grant describes a fierce hellcat who’s a bit resentful of Holly for abandoning her as a child in pursuit of her own dreams.

For the time being, it appears that Tommy is still the Walker clan’s little black sheep. A future story suggests he may be sabotaging the family biz. All Balty will say is, “I’m hoping to throw a curveball, but we won’t know his motives until the end of the year. Everybody agrees we don’t want to paint Tommy into a corner again.”

Can you guess which part of that makes me want to scream? Oh, and my faith in DMG is quickly going down the crapper.

Q&A with David Marshall Grant

http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2009/10/david-marshall-grant-on-brothers-sisters-50.html

"Brothers & Sisters" producer Allison Schapker is out as showrunner while David Marshall Grant is in. The transition is an amicable one though, as both are happy to answer questions together about what's in store for the Walker family for the rest of the season, along with this Sunday's (Nov. 1) return of wayward son Tommy (Balthazar Getty).

There has been a lot of turnover in the showrunner position. What can we be expecting from "Brothers & Sisters" 5.0?

David: Hopefully more of the same. I mean, we want to keep the show going in the great way that it's been going all season.

In taking over, are there any characters that you think are under-utilized or maybe could be used in a different way?

David: Well, first of all I just want to talk about the transition. All of us have been here since the end of the first season, middle of the first season, so we've just been a big team over here doing this for the last three-and-a-half years and I know that Allison and Monica [Breen] can speak more to this, but they've been dying to start their development. This job is mind-numbing so we're just doing a sort-of transitional changing-of-chairs so to speak and they're obviously staying here to write because I don't think we could do this without them. We're just trying to keep moving forward.

As for the characters, I think all the characters have been used to great effect. One of the challenges has been to use 10 people in every episode. We've been trying to do a little more with Scotty. Allison and Monica started that ball rolling in the beginning of the year. Scotty has his own storyline in [the Nov. 8] episode "The Wig Party, " so we've been doing that some. We're always interested in finding more stories for Saul. We're always looking to help the characters that haven't been seen as much grow and put different characters with different people, pairing them up in different ways.

The biggest storyline this year has obviously been Kitty's cancer. Why Kitty? Why was she the best character to give a disease to?

Allison: Greg Berlanti had a real vision and at the beginning of the season he helped guide us and set direction and really wanted to explore a health crisis for the family and see how the Walkers dealt with that. Calista is just such a tremendous actress, as all our cast is, they're all tremendous actors, but we thought it would be challenging for Kitty given that she's a new mom and she and her husband Robert McCallister have been having problems and see how an illness shakes things up. We think she's done a beautiful job so far.

"The Wig Party" is the last episode Monica and I oversaw, we're very proud of it and David wrote a tremendous script and it speaks to the collaboration that the show has always had, especially between Monica, David and I. So that's kind of the episode where we pass the baton. Monica and I have been doing the job since the middle of season two and we've had a long run and David has always had such an incredible feel for the show, it felt like a natural time for David to take over and do tremendous things with the Walkers.

David: Part of the other thing with Kitty is that she's a new mother and facing cancer at her age is different than if Nora were to have the diagnosis, for Kitty it's really early in the prime of her life.

You're not killing off Calista, are you?

David: [laughs] Only the episodes will tell!

Another big storyline that just popped up last episode was Holly's money problems. How far are you going to take that? Is it going to be Hobo Holly? Or is she going to have to move in with Nora, all Laverne & Shirley-like?

David: I think that again episodes will tell. Holly's going to be very much tested this season, both by her own personal finances and the troubles that are happening at Ojai Foods. It's a way to see the pressures that are being put upon Holly and the choices she makes will be the stuff of a lot of really good stories.

We saw in the previews for this week's episodes that Balthazar Getty is coming back on Sunday. Is Tommy back to stay? How long can we expect to see him around the Walker Mansion?

David: Tommy is gonna be in and out. Obviously it's exciting to see Tommy so those are going to be important episodes for us. He'll be coming in and out of the family the whole season.

So will he be around directly after "The Wig Party" or will it be a few episodes before we see him again?

David: I think it'll be a little while after this episode that you see him again. [laughs] What am I saying? I already know for sure it'll be a couple episodes before we see him again.

Justin has taken on a lot this season, what with getting engaged and starting medical school. Who do you prefer, Med Student Justin or Crack Addict Justin?

David: Well, I think that the good thing about VICODIN ADDICT Justin (I don't think he ever did crack) --

Allison: If he did, it was off-camera.

David: I think that that all is Justin and the great thing about Justin as a character is that he's got a lot of challenges and he carries with him some baggage as a human being and so as he navigates medical school, he's always dealing with his past as a drug addict, his past as a veteran, he's dealing with his past as a particular kind of member of the Walker family who maybe wasn't considered the Most Likely to Succeed sibling. I think medical school is a great place for him to see if he's overcome those kinds of issues. Justin as a Vicodin addict is always going to be Justin, just because he's not using doesn't mean he's not an addict. He's a recovering addict.

We did a little digging and saw that back in the day, you were on four episodes of "thirtysomething" with Ken Olin and Patricia Wettig. Do you remember what it was like working with them? What is it like working with them again?

David: I have no memory it, it was so long ago. [laughs] No, it's been great, I actually knew Ken from one of the first plays I ever did in New York City. We did it at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in the basement, honestly. He was a stripper in it, he strip-teased in it. I've known him my whole career. We crossed paths again on "thirtysomething" and now we've crossed paths on this.

He's a delight and his wife is incredibly talented and obviously an Emmy-awarded actress, so we're so fortunate to have her play this character that has really poppped. It's a part that could've not been as exciting for us, but just from the first time Holly came on the show she has been such a character. Patty has brought so much to the character.

She's a character that you want to hate but you just can't because of Patricia Wettig.

David: Exactly. You want to hate her, but ... .

In our last couple minutes, can you tell me what some of your favorite moments on "Brothers & Sisters" have been?

Allison: Actually I think one of them is coming up in "The Wig Party." Calista is going to have to face ... actually, can I say that? There's a beautiful moment in "The Wig Party" between Kitty, Nora and Sarah as a family and it's incredible to watch.

David: One of mine goes back to one of those early episodes when Nora was at the dinner party and everybody thought she didn't know about Holly sleeping with William and then she makes that toast and let's them all know that she does know.

Allison: Actually I have another one. When Kevin proposed to Scotty, one of my all-time favorites.

Anyone have any thoughts as to what this means? Is David a good writer?

Very interesting behind-the-scenes development over at Brothers & Sisters…
An ABC spokesperson is confirming that Monica Breen and Alison Schapker are out as showrunners and longtime B&S scribe David Marshall Grant is in.
The ABC rep adds that Breen and Schapker continue to serve as executive producers/writers on the show but are now “concentrating more on development.”
Note to self: Do some digging. Something about this smells a little fishy.

Surprise Pregnancy

"Finally, some happy tears to be shed on ABC's Brothers & Sisters.

Sources tell me that along with a wedding, an extended hot French romance (Gilles Marini, anyone?) and a homecoming for Balthazar Getty and his so-much-better half Sarah Jane Morris, a huge pregnancy surprise is in the works.

So who is the mama to be?

I can rule out one Walker for you: It's not Sally Field. I know...Now you're really thrown!

And though Kevin and Scotty will move forward with their surrogacy plans, this has nothing to do with that.

More clues: Gilles Marini's 12-pack abs were just awarded an extra four episodes, slated to begin in January.

So could Sara (Rachel Griffiths) have a hot, half-French bun in the oven? (An adorable mini croissant, if you will?)

Or maybe Kitty will have a miracle baby? Julia a baby by another daddy? Or perhaps Justin and Rebecca's recently seen "study break" was more productive then they thought?"
