Interview with Gilles Marini

Hey,

I found this long interview with Gilles Marini in which he talks about the rest of the season as well as his role last fall.

Interview: Gilles Marini
Submitted by Pip on Tue, 02/09/2010 - 21:20

Gilles MariniYou may not think you know who French actor Gilles Marini is but let us assure you that you do. Remember back to Sex and the City: The Movie and that infamous scene where Samantha spies on her neighbour having sex? Well it’s true to say that Gilles first came onto our radar thanks to that scene but he’s also appeared in hit shows such as Nip/Tuck, Dirty Sexy Money and Ugly Betty as well as appearing on Dancing With The Stars.

Now Gilles is starring as Luc Laurent, love interest to Sarah Walker (Rachel Griffiths) in the US drama Brothers and Sisters. As he’s just arrived on the show here in the UK we thought we’d give Gilles a call to find out more about his character, talk to him about his experiences on the Brothers and Sisters set and discuss his love of England.

Keep on reading for an open, honest and frank interview with the sweetest French man we’ve ever had the pleasure to interview.

How are you today?

I’m good. It’s raining in LA which is unusual. When it’s raining in LA no one does anything. It’s like there’s nothing else to do. It’s a very outdoor city.

What have you been doing so far today?

I woke up and went over my new script, my new lines for the show that we’re shooting now. It’s pretty interesting the way the character takes shape and the direction the writers are taking me. I really like it so I’m really excited.

Tell us a bit about Luc Laurent, your character in 'Brothers and Sisters'.

Luc Laurent is an artist…a painter. He lives in France. Rachel Griffiths’ character Sarah is getting lost in the middle of nowhere in the region of Bourgogne and ends up going to a barn and meeting Luc Laurent. He’s a cool, mellow character but he completely falls in love with her. It’s like one of those love stories that theirs is nothing under. Luc and Sarah want nothing other than to love each other. It’s really refreshing and that’s why there’s a lot of vibe about it and a lot of people are talking about it. It’s like the love stories we had back in the days in the movies that’s been a bit lost and we’re recreating this. It’s really exciting.

What’s in store for Sarah and Luc?

In the first part of the season they’re going to find out that they definitely love each other and there’s going to be a bit of conflict with the family. Luc Laurent is very spontaneous and he’s doing things without thinking too much because he’s an artist. On the other side Sarah is very calculating and everything needs to be square. That’s the difference, that’s why they love each other and that’s why they have problems. Down the line, Luc is going to do things to make Sarah understand who she really is in her heart. He’s there to make her realise how powerful love is and how important it is to have this part of your life surrounded by love versus work, work, work.

The reception to Luc in the US has been fantastic. How has that been for you?

You know what? I never thought in a million years that people would be so passionate about this character. Everyday I’m like ‘are you serious?’ For me it’s been quite an amazing ride. I thought that the character would have been nice and refreshing but in the end he’s become this kind of phenomenon where a lot of people are tuning in because they want to hear and see what’s going on. They want to talk about it. The show airs (in the US) on Sunday night and when they go to work the next day they talk about it – ‘did you see what he did? What did you think about his reaction? What did you think about her reaction?’ People really get into it. I’m very pleased because it’s not every day that you create a character that people talk about a lot. The last time it happened to me was with Sex and the City. Now this is kind of the same vibe except this time it’s getting much deeper because we’re talking about really acting. In a way I’m overwhelmed by joy. I wished for nothing else than for people to talk about it and thinking we’re doing a great job.

What’s Rachel Griffiths like to work with?

Rachel…she’s become royalty of acting here. Obviously in her home country (Australia) she’s really famous and she did so many amazing movies before like Muriel’s Wedding and Me, Myself and I. I really really enjoy what she does and what she did on Six Feet Under. Now I’m in a place where I’m working pretty much every day with her and she’s been very supportive. She’s very intuitive. She knows exactly where we’re going and what we should do to make two characters very interesting on screen. Her input is right to the point…she’s got so much experience now that she knows exactly what’s going on. I believe she could be such an amazing director too because manoeuvres and makes us look so good in every scene. It’s very interesting for me to be with such an amazing actress.

How has it been working with the rest of the cast?

I have a great time with every one of them. I was very scared the first day of the shoot because I was sitting down with Rob Lowe, Sally Field, Rachel Griffiths, Calista Flockhart…you have all those people next to you and I was like ‘woah, how are they going to accept me into this very tight family?’ They were so warm and sweet to me all the time and they were there for me when we were creating something really interesting and this is where we are now. It’s been quite an amazing ride. Rob is so sweet. Sally Field…I don’t think you’ve had those scenes yet but I’ve had scenes with her that everyone talked about here for a long time. It’s really touching, it’s really beautiful and I cannot wait for you guys to see that because it’s been quite a great thing.

Which scenes are those?

I have a bit of conflict with Nora (Sally Field’s character) and that’s where it becomes really beautiful. She has a very hard time with Kitty’s (Calista Flockhart’s character) disease and I come into the family at the wrong time because of the dramatic turn of the disease. You will see that my character is really a breath of fresh air for the family and the conflict with Nora will be solved through the way my character is so genuine and a nice human being that only wants good things for the entire family. You’re gonna really enjoy that episode. I’ve only had good compliments and messages from people out there getting through to the forum on my website. People have been saying they were crying and loving it. I cannot wait for England to see it. Brothers and Sisters is a very high quality show. People who watch the show are very much educated people and we can’t cheat anything. We have to be genuine and smart. I know the people from England are very, very educated and I know they will enjoy it.

How long will you be sticking around in 'Brothers and Sisters'?

It’s a bit of a secret. Over the past few days ABC has been releasing that there are contract talks going on for me next season. I’m very, very excited because what an honour it is for a guy that never spoke a word of English and came here with nothing but a dream 10 or 11 years ago, having my kids and making it happen. It’s the American dream. It’s not like I’m in a show that comes and goes and they focus on the looks rather than the quality. I’m in a show where everything is about quality and getting the chance to be in this show for me I just can’t wait. It’s such an exciting moment in my life. It’s very overwhelming.

Fingers crossed. You’ve really changed the dynamic this season.

The show took a turn where it becomes very melodramatic and very deeply sad. It’s going to get even sadder for different characters. Definitely expect a big bang at the end of the season – that’s what we’re going toward right now. I’m shooting episode 18 next week and we’re running to 24 episodes. Even us actors don’t know how it’s going to end up but they’ve promised us something massive to lead to the fifth season. I believe this is going to be the best season of Brothers and Sisters out of the four. The show’s runner David Marshall Grant is so bright and brilliant so we just take it up a notch.

Before 'Brothers and Sisters' you were in 'Sex and the City: The Movie'. How has that changed things for you?

The only regret I have about Sex and the City: The Movie is that I never went to the premiere in London because I love the city. I played in Wembley in 2008 against England for Soccer Aid and I just fell in love with the country. I just loved the people, the atmosphere and the parties and the sweetness. I had such a brilliant time. I know Sex and the City was a very big success in England. The movie changed my life. I woke up one morning after the premiere and the phone never stopped ringing. The character I played was edgy and I wondered how people would react to that. They showed love for it and after that people wanted to see me in different projects. I waited and was very careful what I chose after that character. If you do something kind of similar you’re going to be labelled as that type of character and you don’t want that. I moved on to doing different things and Dancing With The Stars came in to play – I didn’t know what to do. I think it was a great choice going into this show (Brothers and Sisters).

Your body and physique gets a lot of attention. Does that annoy or frustrate you?

I will never spit on what I did in Sex and the City because that put me on the map and gave me a lot of choices. It moved me onto a different level in acting because in the end it comes down to what you sell and that gives you the opportunity to do what you love in the end because it’s all about ratings and how much the movie made. It doesn’t annoy me at all when people come to me and say ‘you were that guy in that movie’. Now it’s people saying ‘I love what you do on Brothers and Sisters’. You are responsible…you have to make sure that people understand that you’re taking a different turn to be taken seriously. I have no problem whatsoever with what I’ve done and people like what I did. A lot of actors are annoyed I know and they say ‘but look what I’m doing now’. You have to be loyal to what you did otherwise you’re not being truthful to yourself. I’m very happy with what I did and never will say that it bothers me that people like what I did on that movie. It doesn’t affect me at all.

What’s next for you?

The good thing is when you shoot a show like that (Brothers and Sisters) is we get two months off – May and June. During that time my management company and my agent are looking for the best project for me to do. I’m really looking either for an action flick – a blockbuster that will show a different light on what I can do physically – or I’d love to do a romantic comedy. It’d be very different to Luc Laurent but having the similarities of the beautiful love story. In this time right now we have a lot of problems economically speaking and we’ve been hit really hard. It’s always good to know that people will go and see you at the movies and they will smile and have a good time. I’m really looking for something like that.

You released a 2010 calendar. Is it something you plan to do every year?

You know what? I don’t think so. I did it for a charity and all my proceeds went to the charity. I’m enjoying the fact that people liked it. It’s really cool. It’s more like an art piece than a calendar because you can barely see the numbers or the days. I was like ‘I’ve got this calendar. What’s the day? I can hardly see it’ (laughs). It’s an art piece that this photographer Fred Goudon made and I said I’d do it if all my proceeds go to charity otherwise it would make no sense for me to do anything like that. Especially the graphic pictures. He used pictures of me from when I was younger because I’ve been working with Fred for 15 years. I don’t think I’ll do that on a yearly basis but you never know. If it’s for a good cause I don’t really care what I’m showing because it’s always to good know you’re doing something good for the world. That’s why I did it.
Domestic saga ups the stakes
Brothers and Sisters. Photo / Supplied

Rob Lowe can't help himself. His Brothers and Sisters co-star, Calista Flockhart, has just entered the room dressed as her character, Kitty, who is forced to wear a pixie-short blond wig following radiation treatment.

"I didn't know your head was shaped quite like ..."

"Like a head," Flockhart says drily.

"I'm seeing her bald for the first time today," he adds. "I'm very excited about it. We can have bald cap sex later if you're interested?"

You can forgive him for a little politically incorrect banter. This season the Walker family, who have so far dealt with everything from death, financial woes, drug addiction, infidelity and divorce, are thrown another curve ball. Still reeling after their marriage woes, new parents Kitty and Robert (Lowe) are forced to re-examine their relationship when Kitty is diagnosed with brain cancer. As much as the story is likely to resonate with thousands of viewers whose lives have been touched by cancer, it acts as a plot device for other themes: change, why you love someone, life priorities.

Flockhart - who ironically appears to be the least fun on today's interview panel - had been hoping for a bit of comedy this season.

"Nothing says funny like cancer," deadpans Dave Annable, who plays Justin.

After reading up on the illness and speaking to people affected by cancer, Flockhart says she feels as prepared as she can be to film the season's more harrowing scenes. It's the technical aspects she finds the most overwhelming. "Actually, it is less time in makeup. But of course Kitty loses her hair, and that's a big deal. It takes two-and-a-half hours to get the bald cap on, which is challenging."

Lowe, who will leave the show this season in an unforeseen event, has also found the story difficult. Five years ago he lost his mother to cancer. And last year his good friend Patrick Swayze succumbed to the disease. Humour, he says, has been a way for him to cope.

"The true winners - regardless of whether they win or lose their battles - face it with such amazing dignity and humour. So I think there is huge room for comedy underneath it. That's what makes it so interesting because the stakes are so high."

The story has also been a huge blow to Sally Field, who plays Nora, Kitty's mother. "I know there are a lot of people in this world going through this but I hate playing it," she says. "I'm a mother, so playing that your child is sick is just the worst thing on Earth. I hate it. It's painful. It's awful. I hate it. I hate it."

Last season, the Walkers said goodbye to Tommy (Balthazar Getty) who fled to Mexico, and welcomed their father's love child, Ryan (Luke Grimes), into the family.

"I feel like the weirdo a little bit and the outcast," says Grimes. "But everybody's so good to me and so nice, it makes up for that."

Sarah is also off-screen for part of the season as actress Rachel Griffiths is on maternity leave. When Sarah returns from a business trip to France she hits the dating scene for the first time since her divorce. Gay couple Kevin (Matthew Rhys) and Scotty (Luke Macfarlane) will face challenges as they contemplate becoming surrogate parents.

With all the time the Walkers will spend in hospital, perhaps it's no surprise Justin is keen to become a doctor.

He'll be ensconced in his studies while planning his wedding to Rebecca, forcing him to question his priorities and sense of identity.

Saul (Ron Rifkin) also has a lot of soul-searching to do when he comes out to the rest of the family as a gay man. Field, whose character has crushes of her own this season, wonders if that will mean he finally gets a love life.

"The poor guy hasn't had sex in a long time. And there's this sick child ..."

Rifkin: "You can have sex when someone is sick."

Field: "No, you can't."

Rifkin: "Yes, you can. It relieves you."

Field: "Oh, for God's sake."

Now in its fourth season, Brothers and Sisters has well and truly lodged itself firmly in that weird place between drama and soap opera or as Field calls it, "heightened reality".

"It's a melodrama and that is an okay thing," says Field.

"What our show has that most serialised melodrama usually doesn't have is comedy."

Nielsen Ratings #Million viewers vs. 18-49 Demographic

I wasn't sure where to post this, but it is an excellent piece on the relative value (or not) of the number of million viewers total a show gets and the 18-49 sales demographic. It's great reading for people who don't understand the importance of the sales demographic:

22 Episodes for Season 4 confirmed

I haven't seen this actually confirmed anywhere until now. B&S is schedule to produce 22 episodes total for the current season. That leaves 12 yet to air. Any guesses about when they will air?

"The rest of its lineup - including "Castle," "The Middle," "Modern Family," "Cougar Town," "Ugly Betty" and "Brothers & Sisters" - currently have the standard full seasons of 22 episodes."
